Escape into nature at ‘The Nak’

A pit stop for a coffee on weekend trips is responsible for more rural purchases than we can imagine. Latte in hand, and wanting to stretch their legs folks wander down the street and come across the real estate agents window, and voila! The dream of a country escape starts to take shape.
It was a very similar tale when the current owners of The Nak saw an ad in a Trafalgar real estate agency window. Where some may have seen a disused, block built work shed, they saw … potential!
It was 2004 and the building was a former knackery (romance level zero), surrounded by Uralla Nature Reserve, at the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges. Forest, birds, possums and peace. All that was missing was the experienced and visionary hand of Wolveridge Architects to bring out the best of the place, and add the romance.
According to Wolveridge the client wanted to enjoy simple liveability – allowing them to lock up and leave for periods of time.
The result is an uncomplicated, but stylish design, with massive openings cut out of the blocks allowing light to meander across stained wood linings and timber floors.
It’s a one-bedroom hideaway, but it could certainly take on visitors if interlopers insisted on staying over. It is meant to be almost utilitarian, but you can’t go past the dashes of pinache.
Up an electric blue staircase is the mezzanine bedroom, which allows for views deep into the tree top canopy, and also offer a chance for the warmth of the mighty big fireplace to fill the space.
There is power, and there is gas bottle fed kitchen and hot water supply and a septic plumbing system. All the man-made needs are met, and nature provides the rest.
It’s just a couple of minutes to Trafalgar by car (speaking of which – did you know they have a Holden museum there?), and Moe is a ten-minute trip away. It’s also an easy 130km drive to Melbourne’s CBD on the Princes Highway.
Keep it the way it is, or indeed take the plunge and make even more of a valley escape plan. Make a latte and start thinking about what might be….
