Enjoy a trail of taste sensations
It’s not just wine that makes the Yarra Valley famous – take the gin trail and you’ll understand why.
A day on the gin trail in the Yarra Valley will no doubt surprise you. There’s an array of great local businesses serving the very best of this popular spirit. And by taking a tour, you’ll get the chance to meet the passionate makers behind the products.
Four Pillars Distillery, Healesville
Gin is enjoying a resurgence and it’s no wonder when you taste the contemporary gins being crafted today.
There’s just about every gin at the award-winning Four Pillars Distillery. Among this rapidly rising distillery’s most popular is their Rare Dry, or the Bloody Shiraz Gin – gin steeped in Shiraz grapes. Tasting paddles and an extensive cocktail list can be enjoyed by visitors to the Healesville distillery, along with the opportunity to watch gin distillation and production through the viewing windows. The change to see, smell, and soak in the multitude of aromatics makes this experience a feast for the senses. And it doesn’t stop with gin tastings – there’s gin marmalade, gin chocolate, gin cheese, gin cocktails, and even gin pig snags.
Rochford Wines Gin Bar, Coldstream
The makers of great wines are now making great gin. Rochford Wines has added a new experience to their cellar door and Isabella’s restaurant with the opening of a new gin tasting bar. Try their signature gins distilled from Rochford Chardonnay and Rochford Pinot Noir, with carefully matched botanicals.
Zonzo Estate Gin, Yarra Glen
In a transformed milking shed, among 45 acres of vines, you’ll find the irrepressible Zonzo Estate. It’s orange and rosemary infused gin is a not- to-be-missed experience for fans of this spirit. The estate also prides itself on an outstanding range of wines and authentic Italian dining – all served with stunning, scenic views.
Coombe Estate – Coldstream
Next on the gin trail is Coombe Estate, the former home of Dame Nellie Melba. It has produced a handcrafted spirit with a contemporary twist on the original London Dry Gin. Native Australian lemon myrtle is used to enhance the citrus presence in the spirit, while the pairing of juniper and coriander seed gives subtle scents of lavender. The gin’s makers say the long, complex and textural finish brings a smoothness and richness to the gin, epitomising all that the Melba legend represents.
The Melbourne Gin Company – Gembrook
The Melbourne Gin Company is the latest project from winemaker Andrew Mark who works at his family property Gembrook Hill Vineyard and also makes wine under his own label The Wanderer Wines.
In 2009, a love for gin Martinis and fascination with the notion of the unattainable ideal drink, led Andrew into the world of distillation. As a result, he established The Melbourne Gin Company in 2012.
Andrew takes a winemaking approach to the distillation of gin, by extracting the flavour of botanicals individually to understand their unique characteristics.
Alchemy Distillers – Healesville
Alchemy, a small batch distillery in Healesville, was started in 2016 by a couple of guys who set out to pursue creative freedom and enjoy the adventures along the way. Their vision was to explore distillation in all of its forms. Since then Evan Kipping and Jannick Zester have delivered Australia’s Champion Vodka, Gold Medal Chamomile Gin and a much-anticipated Single Malt Whisky.
The pair converted a 120-year old wood fired bakery into a working distillery and welcome guests to an outdoor beer garden and a cocktail bar that serves a menu of classic and contemporary cocktails that showcase Alchemy spirits and Victorian craft beers.
